New vs. Used: Which is Better?

used vehicles

The debate between buying a new car and buying a used car can be a controversial one, but we think what’s the most important thing to remember is that it entirely depends on you. Today we’re going to look at some pros and cons of buying a new car and of buying a certified used car to hopefully help you decide between the two options.

Buying A New Subaru

If you’re interested in buying a brand new Subaru, we put together some pros and cons so you can see if this is the right decision for you.

Pros

When buying a brand new Subaru you get the full warranty that comes with a new vehicle and the assurance that the car hasn’t been driven by an irresponsible driver. There is no wondering who has had the car previously, as you’ll be the first owner.

You’ll also benefit from having the latest technology and updates in the vehicle from the manufacturer. Year over year the newest updates are put into the newest models, and the newer the model you buy the more features you’ll have.

Cons

One of the biggest cons for most people is cost. Cars depreciate in value (although you can keep the value of your car up by following a strict maintenance schedule), so naturally, the cost of a used car will be lower than the cost of a brand new vehicle. If you get a newer vehicle, you may also find yourself with a higher premium than if you bought used, due to the higher cost of the vehicle.

The cost will come into play again if you choose to sell your vehicle later. Since your vehicle depreciates in value once purchased, if you choose to trade your car in you won’t get the same amount of money back for it, and depending on the vehicle and the condition it’s in upon trading it in, you may find that the value is lower than you expect.

Buying A Used Subaru

Let us say first that if you choose to purchase a used vehicle, you purchase a certified pre-owned Subaru vehicle from a dealership. This gives you much more protection than purchasing a used car from another channel, and our used vehicles aren’t resold without full background checks and servicing.

Pros

The biggest advantage for most used car shoppers is the price. As stated above, naturally used cars sell for less than a brand new car. In contrast to new car insurance costs, you’ll also find that you’re typically paying less insurance for a used car, due to the low cost.

By choosing to buy a certified pre-owned vehicle from Subaru, you’re also purchasing a used vehicle you can rely on. Subaru’s Pre-Owned Vehicles are only sold if they are less than 8 years old, and have less than 160,00km so you never have to worry about getting a car you’ll have to replace in a year. They also must pass a multi-point inspection by one of our Service Technicians, and the vehicles must have a clean CarProof report.

Cons

The biggest con with buying a used vehicle is the lack of choice. You don’t have options between colours, features, or other options that you would when you purchase new. Subaru Pre-Owned vehicles are traded in, so the options that you have are simply what is in stock at certain dealerships.

Another disadvantage is potentially having to pay higher interest rates when financing a pre-owned vehicle. This isn’t always the case, so be sure to ask the sales team what options you have and what the interest rates are.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, it’s up to you and what you’re looking for when buying a vehicle. Compare models, weigh your finances, and decide what the best choice for you is. If you’re still not sure, come in and ask an expert!
