We hear it from customers all the time: what is the difference between the Subaru Forester and the Subaru Crosstrek? They are both classed as a compact crossover, and they are both built on the same platform. They have very similar 103-inch wheelbase and have a very similar car-based platform. However, there are also some differences between the two models.
The Subaru Forester
The Forester sits up a bit taller than the Crosstrek and is almost 6 inches longer. The length and height, combined with more of a square shape than the Crosstrek, offers more cargo space for storage or for more people. The Forester is most popular with families looking for more room to house bodies or store luggage for car trips.
The Forester also weighs more than the Crosstrek. The added weight makes driving the Subaru Forester to feel, as some report it, more “substantial.” With the added weight, it feels a bit more stable. This isn’t something noticed by everyone who drives around in either car, but if you or someone in your family easily gets car sick, the Forester may be the better option over the Crosstrek. If you equip your models comparably, the Forester does come out on the more expensive side – about $2,500 more than the Subaru Crosstrek.
The Subaru Crosstrek
While the Forester looks a little more sophisticated, the Crosstrek is known for it’s edgy and aggressive look. With the raised suspension, the Crosstrek travels especially well as it has more space for the suspension to compress. If you’re looking to take your Subaru offroading, this is the ideal model for you.
The Crosstrek is also agiler than the Forester, while still having a large interior. Where families usually lean towards the Forester, singles or couples (without children) tend to go for the Crosstrek’s more sporty feel.
What Do They Both Have?
Both the Subaru Forester and the Subaru Crosstrek come standard with a number of safety options. These include symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes, and Vehicle Dynamics Control. Each model also comes with Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, and much more.
